Michigan is one of two states that does not have an official State Insect. The Monarch Butterfly is widely recognized throughout the State of Michigan, and lures many tourists annually to the shores of The Great Lakes to view its migration. The Monarch's life cycle is symbolic for Michigan: Through hard work and determination, beauty emerges. Conservation efforts are underway across the state of Michigan to protect the Monarch Butterfly and by designating the Monarch as Michigan's official State Insect, those efforts will be strengthened.

SB 812 was introduced by Senator Jim Marleau on 2/23/16. HB5560 was introduced by Rep. Aric Nesbitt on 4/14/16. Both bills were sent to their Government Operations Committee . On April 17, 2018 Senator Jim Marleau reintroduced SB948 - It too was referred to the Government Operations Committee. This year, on April 17th Representative Brenda Carter introduced HB4467.
